What it actually does

Remote unauthenticated attacker can trigger unbounded resource consumption in the Bento4 library via crafted input to the affected component, resulting in denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Applications that process untrusted media files may become unresponsive or crash, causing service outages, increased infrastructure costs, and degraded user experience.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious input file that exploits the incomplete remediation of the prior resource-consumption issue; the file is delivered over the network and processed by Bento4, exhausting CPU or memory until the process becomes unresponsive.

How to fix it

Replace the vulnerable Bento4 library with a version that fully addresses the resource-consumption flaw; if no patched release is available, isolate or sandbox any processing of untrusted media and monitor for excessive resource usage.

How to confirm the fix worked

Rebuild or redeploy with the updated library, then re-execute the publicly disclosed proof-of-concept input while monitoring process CPU and memory usage to confirm the denial-of-service condition no longer occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target application that uses the vulnerable Bento4 library to parse media
  2. Generate or obtain a specially crafted input file that triggers the resource-consumption path
  3. Deliver the file to the target via network-accessible upload, download, or streaming interface
  4. Trigger processing of the file, causing sustained resource exhaustion and service degradation

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for sudden spikes in CPU or memory consumption coinciding with media-file processing; correlate with web-server or upload logs showing requests that deliver files shortly before the resource spike.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all deployments that embed or link against Bento4 and prioritize upgrade or replacement
  • Apply network-level controls to limit exposure of media-processing endpoints to untrusted sources
  • Implement resource limits and monitoring on processes that invoke Bento4 to contain impact
  • Subscribe to upstream project notifications for any subsequent fixes addressing the incomplete remediation
