What it actually does
Out-of-memory condition triggered in the Ap4Array allocator during parsing of malformed media containers, resulting in process termination.
Why it matters to the business
Media processing pipelines that ingest untrusted files can be forced offline, halting content workflows and requiring manual restarts or restarts of dependent services.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a specially malformed MP4 or similar container that causes excessive array allocation attempts; when Bento4 processes the file locally the allocator fails and the application crashes.
How to fix it
Upgrade Bento4 to the latest available build that resolves the allocator bounds check; if no fixed release exists, sandbox the tool, restrict it to trusted input only, or replace it with an alternative library.
How to confirm the fix worked
Reproduce with known trigger files in a controlled environment and confirm the process no longer terminates with an out-of-memory condition; monitor allocator error paths in debug builds.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or generate a malformed media file targeting Ap4Array allocation
- Deliver the file to a system running Bento4 (local file open or automated ingest)
- Trigger parsing which exhausts memory in the allocator
- Observe application crash and denial of service
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for repeated Bento4 process terminations accompanied by allocator or out-of-memory errors when processing media files.
- Ap4Array.h
- allocator is out of memory
What your security team should do
- Isolate Bento4 usage behind sandboxing or containerization
- Block untrusted media ingestion until a patched build is deployed
- Add file-type and size validation before processing
- Monitor for repeated Bento4 crashes in application logs
The record
