What it actually does
The flaw triggers a segmentation violation (crash) inside Ap4DataBuffer when MP4Dump processes a malformed MP4 file, resulting in denial of service via memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Processing untrusted media files with the affected tool can cause unexpected crashes, interrupting media analysis workflows or automated pipelines that rely on Bento4 utilities.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a specially crafted MP4 file that reaches the vulnerable code path in Ap4DataBuffer.cpp; when the victim runs MP4Dump on the file the process terminates with a segmentation fault.
How to fix it
Upgrade to the latest Bento4 release that resolves the buffer handling issue; if no update is available, replace MP4Dump usage with alternative tools or sandbox execution when handling untrusted media.
How to confirm the fix worked
Test the updated binary against known crashing sample files and confirm absence of segmentation faults; monitor process exit codes and core dumps during media processing jobs.
Typical attack path
- attacker crafts malicious MP4 file targeting the data buffer handling code
- victim or automated system invokes MP4Dump against the supplied file
- segmentation violation occurs and the process crashes
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for abrupt MP4Dump terminations or segmentation fault signals when processing MP4 files; correlate with file creation timestamps of recently received media.
What your security team should do
- Remove or restrict MP4Dump from any automated pipelines that accept untrusted input
- Apply the newest Bento4 package once a fixed build is published
- Implement file-type sandboxing or container isolation for all media utilities
The record
