What it actually does

Multiple memory safety bugs in Firefox 102 that exhibit memory corruption and could be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Remote attackers could gain full control of affected user systems running unpatched Firefox, enabling data theft, malware deployment, or lateral movement; the vulnerability has been public for nearly four years with low but non-zero exploitation probability.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts specially formatted web content that triggers one of the memory corruption issues when rendered in Firefox, achieving code execution in the browser process without requiring user credentials or interaction beyond page visitation.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 103 or later on all systems.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm all Firefox installations report version 103 or higher; scan enterprise endpoints and browser update logs for any instances still reporting versions below 103.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify or craft a web page that exercises the memory safety bugs
  2. Host or inject the malicious content on a site visited by the target
  3. Trigger memory corruption to achieve arbitrary code execution in the browser

How to detect it

Examine browser crash reports, process creation logs, and network traffic for signs of unexpected code execution or memory-related anomalies in Firefox processes; correlate with web request histories to malicious domains.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy Firefox 103+ across the environment
  • Audit browser update policies and enforce automatic updates
  • Review endpoint detection rules for browser process anomalies

The record

Mozilla developers and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 102. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 103.
