What it actually does
The vulnerability causes an uninitialized pointer to be freed in the lg_init() function when a later allocation fails after earlier ones succeed, resulting in memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Potential remote code execution or application crashes on user systems running vulnerable Firefox versions, leading to data compromise or loss of productivity.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies crafted content that drives the browser through the lg_init() allocation sequence until an intentional failure occurs, freeing the uninitialized pointer and allowing memory manipulation for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 102 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the Firefox version string reports 102 or higher and retest the affected code paths if source-level validation is possible.
Typical attack path
- Serve malicious web content or attachment to the target
- Trigger the allocation path in lg_init() that leads to a subsequent failure
- Leverage the resulting uninitialized free for memory corruption and arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Inspect browser crash reports and memory dumps for references to lg_init allocation failures; no public exploitation artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy Firefox 102 or newer across all managed endpoints
- Review browser update policies to enforce automatic updates
- Monitor crash telemetry for unusual allocation-related failures
The record
Within the <code>lg_init()</code> function, if several allocations succeed but then one fails, an uninitialized pointer would have been freed despite never being allocated. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 102.
