What it actually does
Use-after-free condition in WebGL extension handling allows memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution or denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can remotely compromise user systems running outdated browser or email client versions, resulting in data theft, malware deployment, or loss of user trust across large user bases.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a specially crafted webpage that loads WebGL content designed to trigger the use-after-free in affected Firefox or Thunderbird versions; successful exploitation grants code execution within the browser process without user interaction beyond visiting the page.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 107 or later, Firefox ESR to 102.6 or later, and Thunderbird to 102.6 or later; apply updates through official channels as soon as possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed browser and client versions against the fixed releases; retest WebGL functionality on updated builds to confirm absence of the crash condition.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares malicious WebGL payload targeting the vulnerable extension code path
- Victim is directed to attacker-controlled webpage via phishing or compromised site
- Browser parses and executes the WebGL content, triggering use-after-free
- Memory corruption is abused to achieve code execution or reliable crash
- Attacker payload executes within browser context to install malware or exfiltrate data
How to detect it
Review browser process crash logs and memory dumps for patterns consistent with WebGL extension failures; examine web proxy and endpoint logs for access to domains hosting suspicious WebGL content around the time of any unexplained browser crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize immediate patching of all Firefox, ESR, and Thunderbird instances to the versions that resolve the use-after-free
- Enable automatic updates where feasible to reduce exposure window
- Monitor threat intelligence feeds for any increase in exploitation activity against this class of browser flaw
The record
A use-after-free in WebGL extensions could have led to a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 107, Firefox ESR < 102.6, and Thunderbird < 102.6.
