What it actually does
The flaw permits an ASN.1 parser to accept malformed input containing an indefinite SEQUENCE nested inside an indefinite GROUP, bypassing intended structural validation checks.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected media player packages on Debian and Ubuntu releases remain exposed to remote attacks that could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or service disruption; the issue has been public for nearly four years with low but persistent exploit probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a crafted media file or stream containing the malformed ASN.1 structure; the vulnerable parser accepts the invalid encoding and proceeds with subsequent operations that an attacker can leverage for memory corruption or code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade mplayer to the following fixed package versions: Debian 11 to 2:1.4+ds1-1+deb11u1, Debian 12/13 to 2:1.5+svn38408-1, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to 2:1.2.1-1ubuntu1.1+esm1, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to 2:1.3.0-7ubuntu0.2, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to 2:1.3.0-8+deb10u1build0.20.04.1, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to 2:1.4+ds1-3ubuntu0.1.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query the package manager on each system to confirm the installed mplayer version matches or exceeds the listed fixed releases; re-test media parsing with known malformed ASN.1 samples if available in test suites.
Typical attack path
- Identify a target system using an unpatched mplayer package
- Craft or obtain a media file embedding the malformed ASN.1 SEQUENCE/GROUP
- Deliver the file via network share, web download, or local execution
- Trigger parsing through normal media playback or thumbnail generation
- Leverage resulting memory state for further exploitation
How to detect it
Review system and application logs for unexpected crashes or parsing errors during media file handling; correlate with file-access timestamps on untrusted media; no public exploit artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed package updates across all Debian and Ubuntu fleets within standard change windows
- Inventory all systems using mplayer and prioritize those reachable from untrusted networks
- Monitor vendor advisories for any downstream dependent packages that also embed the vulnerable parser
- Add the fixed versions to baseline configuration and image templates
The record
ASN.1 parsing of an indefinite SEQUENCE inside an indefinite GROUP could have resulted in the parser accepting malformed ASN.1. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 102.
