What it actually does

Memory corruption vulnerabilities in the browser engine that can be triggered by malicious web content to achieve arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could take full control of affected user systems after a single visit to a malicious site, leading to data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement with high urgency due to the 1396 days since publication and stable but non-zero exploitability signals.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts or compromises a web page containing specially crafted content that triggers one of the memory safety bugs when rendered in vulnerable Firefox versions; with sufficient effort the corruption can be turned into remote code execution, though no named threat actors or ransomware campaigns have been observed exploiting this issue.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 99 or later on all systems; enable automatic updates where possible and audit any pinned or enterprise-managed deployments for versions below 99.

How to confirm the fix worked

Query browser version strings across the environment and confirm no instances remain below 99; review crash reports for memory-safety related signatures and re-test with the latest version.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares a malicious webpage exploiting the memory corruption
  2. Victim is tricked into visiting the page via phishing or compromised site
  3. Browser renders the page and triggers memory corruption
  4. Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution within the browser process
  5. Payload downloads additional malware or establishes persistence

How to detect it

Review browser crash logs and telemetry for memory corruption indicators; correlate web proxy or endpoint logs with visits to recently created or suspicious domains around the time of any anomalous Firefox processes.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy Firefox 99+ across all endpoints
  • Block or isolate legacy browser instances until updated
  • Monitor for anomalous browser process behavior or unexpected network connections from Firefox

The record

Mozilla developers and community members Randell Jesup, Sebastian Hengst, and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 98. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 99.
