What it actually does

Integer overflow in the qtdemux_inflate function during zlib decompression of QT media streams allows a crafted file to trigger either a segmentation fault or a heap memory overwrite depending on the underlying libc and OS allocator behavior.

Why it matters to the business

Processing untrusted media files can cause application crashes that interrupt media playback or encoding workflows and, on some platforms, may permit arbitrary code execution leading to full system compromise.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted QT container file containing malformed zlib-compressed data sized to trigger the integer overflow inside qtdemux. When the vulnerable GStreamer pipeline parses the file, the overflow occurs during decompression and either crashes the process or corrupts heap memory, enabling control-flow hijacking on susceptible systems.

How to fix it

Upgrade GStreamer to the commit ccf22e315cedf81e0075ab179ffb1b733da5206e or later; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications after the update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed GStreamer source contains commit ccf22e315cedf81e0075ab179ffb1b733da5206e; run regression tests with known trigger files and verify absence of crashes or memory errors under sanitizers.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious QT file with oversized zlib stream that overflows the integer calculation in qtdemux_inflate
  2. Deliver the file to a target application or service that uses GStreamer qtdemux (media player, transcoder, web upload handler)
  3. Trigger parsing of the file through normal media handling
  4. Exploit resulting heap overwrite to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service

How to detect it

Monitor application and system logs for repeated segmentation faults or abnormal memory-allocation failures originating from GStreamer qtdemux pipelines when handling QT files; inspect crash dumps for signs of heap corruption near zlib decompression routines.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all GStreamer installations to the patched commit and rebuild dependent packages
  • Restrict processing of untrusted media files until patches are applied
  • Add the fixed commit hash to vulnerability scanning and SBOM policies

The record

DOS / potential heap overwrite in qtdemux using zlib decompression. Integer overflow in qtdemux element in qtdemux_inflate function which causes a segfault, or could cause a heap overwrite, depending on libc and OS. Depending on the libc used, and the underlying OS capabilities, it could be just a segfault or a heap overwrite.
