What it actually does
Integer overflow in gst_avi_demux_invert function in the avidemux element allows heap buffer overwrite while parsing AVI files, enabling arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Media playback and processing applications using GStreamer become susceptible to remote code execution when handling untrusted AVI files, potentially leading to full system compromise on affected endpoints.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a malicious AVI file crafted to trigger the integer overflow in the avidemux element during parsing; the resulting heap overwrite allows injection and execution of arbitrary code on the victim's system.
How to fix it
Upgrade gstreamer/gstreamer to commit ccf22e315cedf81e0075ab179ffb1b733da5206e or later; rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed GStreamer source matches or exceeds commit ccf22e315cedf81e0075ab179ffb1b733da5206e; test parsing of known-good and malformed AVI samples in a controlled environment.
Typical attack path
- Attacker crafts malicious AVI file exploiting integer overflow in avidemux parser
- Malicious file is delivered via email, web download, or removable media
- Victim opens the file using GStreamer-based media software
- Parser processes the file, triggering heap overwrite and code execution
How to detect it
Review application logs for GStreamer avidemux errors or crashes during AVI processing; inspect process memory dumps or crash reports for heap corruption patterns around AVI demux operations.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update GStreamer to the fixed commit across all builds and distributions
- Restrict processing of untrusted AVI files until patches are applied
- Monitor for new exploit releases given the ExploitAvailable maturity
- Include GStreamer updates in standard patch management cycles
The record
Integer overflow in avidemux element in gst_avi_demux_invert function which allows a heap overwrite while parsing avi files. Potential for arbitrary code execution through heap overwrite.
