What it actually does

Use-after-free vulnerability in Chrome's media codecs allowing heap corruption when processing crafted media content in HTML.

Why it matters to the business

Enables remote attackers to potentially execute arbitrary code or cause browser crashes on users viewing malicious web pages, increasing risk of data theft or system compromise across browser-dependent workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a specially crafted HTML page containing malicious media that triggers the use-after-free condition in the codec handling path; when a victim visits the page, the freed memory is reused leading to heap corruption that can be leveraged for code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 101.0.4951.41 or later. Apply browser updates automatically where possible and enforce enterprise update policies.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Chrome version is 101.0.4951.41 or newer via chrome://version or enterprise management consoles; test rendering of known trigger media patterns in isolated environments.

Typical attack path

  1. Host crafted HTML page with malicious media content
  2. Lure victim to visit the page via phishing or compromised sites
  3. Trigger codec processing to cause use-after-free
  4. Exploit resulting heap corruption for arbitrary code execution

How to detect it

Monitor browser crash reports for codec-related heap corruption signatures; inspect web proxy logs for unusual media requests from untrusted domains; review endpoint telemetry for unexpected process spawns following browser activity.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize browser updates across all endpoints due to high CVSS and remote exploitability
  • Enable automatic updates and monitor for update failures in fleet management tools
  • Block or sandbox untrusted media content in high-risk environments until patched
  • Review EPSS trend and scan for any post-patch exploitation attempts

The record

Use after free in Codecs in Google Chrome prior to 101.0.4951.41 allowed a remote attacker to potentially exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page.
