What it actually does
Improper handling of high bits during internationalized domain name parsing in URLs creates inconsistent representations that can be exploited for visual confusion.
Why it matters to the business
Users may be misled into visiting attacker-controlled sites that appear legitimate, increasing risk of phishing success and potential loss of credentials or sensitive data.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker registers or controls a domain whose internationalized form, after high-bit stripping during parsing, renders identically or similarly to a trusted site in the browser's address bar or UI, tricking the user into interaction.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 94 or later to correct IDN parsing behavior.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm Firefox version is 94 or newer via about:support or Help > About Firefox; test IDN URLs known to trigger prior inconsistencies to verify consistent handling.
Typical attack path
- Identify a target domain and craft a visually similar internationalized variant
- Host phishing content on the crafted domain
- Deliver the malicious URL via email, messaging, or web content
- User interaction causes the browser to display or resolve the stripped form inconsistently
- Victim proceeds under false assumption of legitimacy
How to detect it
Examine browser history, download logs, and proxy records for visits to domains exhibiting IDN character anomalies; correlate with user reports of unexpected site behavior.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of Firefox 94+ across all managed endpoints
- Monitor browser update compliance metrics
- Reinforce user awareness of URL inspection for phishing indicators
- Review proxy or endpoint logs for anomalous IDN traffic if available
The record
When parsing internationalized domain names, high bits of the characters in the URLs were sometimes stripped, resulting in inconsistencies that could lead to user confusion or attacks such as phishing. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 94.
