What it actually does

Incorrect sanitization of the 302 redirect field in the HTTP transport method allows a MITM attacker to inject arbitrary content, resulting in command injection and remote code execution on the target system.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can compromise systems during package updates, leading to full system takeover, data breaches, and operational disruption; the flaw affects widely used update mechanisms in affected products with high ecosystem prevalence.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker positioned as a MITM intercepts HTTP traffic during package retrieval, crafts a malicious 302 redirect response to inject commands, and causes the system to execute attacker-controlled content as part of the update process.

How to fix it

Upgrade freepbx/core to commit 8972934be22d583b2cc2dc3a052098acb91e55ea and freepbx/framework to commit ecf7d58676c51cea8e2492256722343346ada20b; restrict package manager traffic to HTTPS-only sources and implement network segmentation to reduce MITM exposure.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the presence of the fixed commits in the deployed codebase; test by simulating MITM conditions with a 302 redirect and confirm that injected content is rejected; scan for the vulnerable apt versions 1.4.8 and earlier.

Typical attack path

  1. Position as MITM on the network path to the update server
  2. Intercept HTTP requests for package metadata or files
  3. Respond with a crafted 302 redirect containing injected content
  4. Trigger the vulnerable transport handler to process the redirect
  5. Achieve command execution during the update operation

How to detect it

Review package manager logs and HTTP proxy logs for anomalous 302 redirects during updates; look for unexpected command execution artifacts or modified package files post-update.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified git commits immediately given the stable EPSS and long publication window
  • Enforce HTTPS for all package repositories and monitor for downgrade attempts
  • Audit update logs for unexpected redirects or content injections
  • Prioritize patching in high-prevalence environments to limit blast radius

The record

Incorrect sanitation of the 302 redirect field in HTTP transport method of apt versions 1.4.8 and earlier can lead to content injection by a MITM attacker, potentially leading to remote code execution on the target machine.
