Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in how some systems fetch updates over the network could let someone in the middle crash the process or run their own code, so updating the software removes the weakness.

What it actually does

Buffer overflow in HTTP transport code triggered by a crafted URL allows memory corruption that can lead to process crash or arbitrary code execution under MITM conditions.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers positioned on the network can disrupt package operations or gain code execution on systems performing updates, increasing risk of service interruption or compromise on older deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker intercepts HTTP traffic to a package repository and supplies a maliciously crafted URL; when the client processes the response the overflow occurs, enabling denial of service or code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected packages to the listed fixed versions: Debian 11/12/13 to 1.7.4-2 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to 1.7.2-0ubuntu1.2. Apply vendor patches and verify installed versions after update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Compare installed package versions against the fixed releases, review update logs for successful upgrades, and test package operations in an isolated environment.

Typical attack path

  1. Position as MITM on path to package repository
  2. Craft malicious URL in HTTP response
  3. Trigger buffer overflow during URL handling
  4. Achieve crash or execute arbitrary code

How to detect it

Review historical package manager logs and network captures around update attempts for unusual URL patterns or crashes; because the issue is years old, focus on archived logs or memory dumps from the publication era.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade all listed affected packages to the provided fixed versions
  • Restrict package manager traffic to trusted repositories over HTTPS where possible
  • Monitor for any remaining legacy systems still running vulnerable releases

The record

Buffer overflow in the HTTP transport code in apt-get in APT 1.0.1 and earlier allows man-in-the-middle attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted URL.
