What it actually does
The changelog command in Apt follows symlinks when writing output, allowing a local attacker to redirect writes to arbitrary files on the system.
Why it matters to the business
A local attacker on unpatched Debian-based systems could overwrite critical configuration or data files, potentially leading to system instability, unauthorized changes, or further privilege escalation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a symlink in place of the expected changelog output file pointing to a sensitive target, then invokes the apt changelog command which follows the link and writes attacker-controlled content to the target location.
How to fix it
Upgrade Apt to version 1.0.9.2 or later on all affected Debian systems; apply package updates via apt itself once a safe version is available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed Apt version is at least 1.0.9.2; test that changelog operations no longer follow or write through symlinks in user-controlled paths.
Typical attack path
- Identify a writable location for the changelog file used by apt
- Create a symlink from that location to a desired target file
- Execute the apt changelog command with appropriate arguments
- Verify or leverage the resulting write to the target file
How to detect it
Search system and audit logs for unexpected file modifications or symlink creations immediately preceding or during apt changelog executions; review user command histories for suspicious apt invocations.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Apt across all Debian-based hosts due to local attack surface
- Review systems for any remaining legacy Apt versions and schedule upgrades
- Harden local user environments to limit symlink creation in apt-related directories
The record
The changelog command in Apt before 1.0.9.2 allows local users to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the changelog file.
