What it actually does
Heap buffer overflow in parser_get_next_char during iCal parsing of malformed email content leads to memory corruption that can be leveraged for remote code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can seize control of email clients, exfiltrate data, install malware, or disrupt operations without any user action, increasing breach and compliance risk across the email user base.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends a crafted email containing malicious iCal data; Thunderbird's parser processes the message, the buffer overflow occurs, and the attacker gains arbitrary code execution inside the client process.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Thunderbird to version 60.7.1 or later; apply the update across all installations as soon as possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed Thunderbird version is 60.7.1 or newer; test with known-malformed iCal samples to verify the parser no longer crashes.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious iCal payload
- Deliver payload via email to target mailbox
- Victim Thunderbird client retrieves and parses the message
- parser_get_next_char overflows heap buffer
- Attacker achieves code execution or crash
How to detect it
Search email client crash logs and memory dumps for iCal parser faults; correlate with inbound message delivery times and attachment metadata.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy Thunderbird 60.7.1+ to all users
- Enable automatic updates where policy permits
- Add crash-reporting telemetry for iCal parser faults
- Review email gateway rules for suspicious calendar attachments
The record
A flaw in Thunderbird's implementation of iCal causes a heap buffer overflow in parser_get_next_char when processing certain email messages, resulting in a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.7.1.
