What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution within the browser or email client process.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to run arbitrary code on user systems, enabling data theft, malware deployment, or lateral movement; widespread use of the affected browsers and email clients amplifies organizational exposure until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker serves malicious web content or email that triggers one of the memory corruption issues when processed by the vulnerable application, leading to control-flow hijacking and arbitrary code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to 59 or later, Firefox ESR to 52.7 or later, and Thunderbird to 52.7 or later. Apply vendor updates as soon as available and verify version numbers after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query installed application versions via about:support, package managers, or system inventory tools and confirm they meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above.
Typical attack path
- Attacker hosts or delivers malicious HTML or email content
- Victim renders the content in a vulnerable Firefox, Firefox ESR, or Thunderbird instance
- Memory corruption is triggered during parsing or rendering
- Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution in the application process
How to detect it
Review browser and email client crash logs for memory corruption indicators, inspect spawned child processes for unexpected executables, and correlate with web or email access logs around the time of any anomalous activity.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy browser and email client updates across all endpoints
- Block or sandbox access to untrusted web content until patches are applied
- Enable application sandboxing and content security policies where supported
- Monitor endpoint telemetry for anomalous browser process behavior
The record
Memory safety bugs were reported in Firefox 58 and Firefox ESR 52.6. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 52.7, Firefox ESR < 52.7, and Firefox < 59.
