What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can gain full control of affected systems and data without authentication or user interaction, creating high risk of compromise across widely deployed client software.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies specially crafted content that triggers the memory corruption flaws during processing, allowing arbitrary code execution on the target system.
How to fix it
Upgrade Thunderbird to 52.6 or later, Firefox ESR to 52.6 or later, and Firefox to 58 or later. For eclipse/rdf4j apply commit 6a96f444f59457b6bf77dc5ce5d7ae7e2bbd274f.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases and perform targeted regression testing against the memory safety issues.
Typical attack path
- Deliver malicious content over the network or via file
- Trigger memory corruption during parsing or rendering
- Execute attacker-controlled code
How to detect it
Review application crash logs and process behavior for signs of unexpected memory corruption or code injection attempts.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed updates immediately given the critical severity
- Block untrusted content sources until patches are deployed
- Audit application inventory for any remaining affected instances
The record
Memory safety bugs were reported in Firefox 57 and Firefox ESR 52.5. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 52.6, Firefox ESR < 52.6, and Firefox < 58.
