What it actually does

Local privilege escalation allowing unprivileged users to spoof callerID and invoke privileged helper applications to obtain root access via vulnerable KDE kdelibs and KAuth components.

Why it matters to the business

Unpatched systems expose full administrative control to any local user, enabling complete compromise of data, services, and infrastructure; while the issue is years old with stable low exploitation probability, organizations running affected timestamp authority packages must address it during maintenance windows to avoid lingering root-level exposure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access identifies a privileged helper application relying on kdelibs or KAuth, crafts a spoofed callerID, and invokes the helper to execute actions with root privileges without proper authentication checks.

How to fix it

Upgrade timestamp-authority-fips, timestamp-authority-fips-cli, and timestamp-authority-fips-server to version 1.2.2-r12 or later; replace or rebuild any packages depending on kdelibs before 4.14.32 or KAuth before 5.34.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed package versions against the fixed releases, review authentication helper configurations for proper callerID validation, and test privilege boundaries with non-root accounts.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell access on the target system
  2. Locate and analyze privileged helper applications using KDE authentication libraries
  3. Craft a spoofed callerID payload
  4. Invoke the helper to perform root-level operations
  5. Establish persistence or exfiltrate data under root context

How to detect it

Review system authentication logs and helper application invocations for unexpected root escalations originating from non-root processes; examine audit trails around KAuth or polkit usage for anomalies.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified package upgrades immediately on all affected Chainguard timestamp-authority deployments
  • Audit local privilege boundaries and helper application permissions
  • Monitor for any local escalation attempts in system logs
  • Remove or isolate legacy KDE components where feasible

The record

KDE kdelibs before 4.14.32 and KAuth before 5.34 allow local users to gain root privileges by spoofing a callerID and leveraging a privileged helper app.
