What it actually does

Allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via path traversal sequences such as ../ in archive filenames processed by the vulnerable component before version 5.24.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can overwrite critical files on affected Debian systems running varnish, leading to potential service disruption, unauthorized code execution, or full system compromise; the issue has been public for over a decade with exploits available though low and stable exploitation probability.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious archive embedding ../ sequences in filenames, delivers it through download or processing flows such as those related to KNewsstuff, and triggers extraction to write files outside the intended directory on the target system.

How to fix it

Upgrade varnish to the fixed version 2.1.0-2 or later on Debian 10 through 14.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed varnish package version is 2.1.0-2 or newer using the system package manager and verify no older vulnerable versions remain.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft archive containing files with ../ path traversal in filenames
  2. Deliver the archive to the target system via network download or similar mechanism
  3. Trigger archive processing in the vulnerable component
  4. Achieve arbitrary file writes to unintended locations

How to detect it

Examine logs from archive processing and file extraction components for evidence of path traversal sequences; review file system changes and download histories from the period of exposure given the vulnerability's age and public exploit availability.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed package upgrades across all affected Debian installations without delay
  • Audit archive handling and download processes for exposure to untrusted files
  • Review historical system activity for signs of prior exploitation given the age and exploit availability

The record

Directory traversal vulnerability in KArchive before 5.24, as used in KDE Frameworks, allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via a ../ (dot dot slash) in a filename in an archive file, related to KNewsstuff downloads.
