CVE-2014-5033

What it actually does

The flaw permits a local attacker to bypass Polkit authorization checks by winning a PID reuse race condition during D-Bus communication with the authority when a setuid or pkexec process is involved.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers who already have a local account can obtain full root privileges on affected Linux desktops, resulting in complete system takeover and potential data theft or persistence.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker on the same host launches a setuid binary or pkexec while racing against Polkit's UnixProcess subject lookup over D-Bus; by forcing PID reuse the attacker supplies a forged subject that passes authorization, granting elevated privileges.

How to fix it

Upgrade kdelibs to 4.14 or newer and kauth to 5.1 or newer on all affected distributions; apply vendor patches for debian kde4libs and canonical ubuntu linux packages immediately.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed package versions against the fixed releases, confirm Polkit D-Bus policy files reference the updated subject handling, and test that setuid/pkexec operations no longer permit unauthorized subject spoofing.

1. Obtain a local shell on an affected KDE desktop
2. Trigger concurrent execution of a setuid or pkexec binary
3. Win the PID-reuse race against the Polkit D-Bus subject lookup
4. Receive unauthorized authorization decision from polkit
5. Escalate to root privileges

How to detect it

Review system and Polkit logs for repeated or unusual authorization requests involving setuid or pkexec processes around the same time as privilege changes; examine auditd records for unexpected root transitions from unprivileged UIDs.

• Prioritize patching all exposed KDE-based workstations within the next maintenance window
• Remove unnecessary setuid binaries and restrict pkexec usage via policy
• Monitor local authentication events for anomalous Polkit decisions until patches are deployed
