What it actually does
Local user triggers NULL pointer dereference in fs/f2fs/segment.c by mounting with noflush_merge option, causing flush_cmd_control to be NULL and resulting in kernel panic.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using the F2FS filesystem experience unexpected crashes and loss of availability when the vulnerable mount option is used, with older unpatched kernels remaining exposed years after disclosure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access on a Linux system mounts an F2FS filesystem using the noflush_merge option, which leaves the flush_cmd_control structure uninitialized and dereferences it as NULL during segment operations, triggering a kernel panic and denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit d4fdf8ba0e5808ba9ad6b44337783bd9935e0982 or later; avoid using the noflush_merge mount option on unpatched F2FS volumes until updated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source or binary contains the referenced commit hash, confirm F2FS mount options no longer trigger the panic condition in testing, and check running kernel version against the fixed release after 4.13.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on target Linux system
- Create or access an F2FS-formatted filesystem
- Mount the filesystem with the noflush_merge mount option
- Perform filesystem operations that invoke segment flush logic
- Trigger NULL dereference leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Review kernel panic logs and dmesg output for F2FS segment.c entries mentioning flush_cmd_control or NULL dereference; search system logs for mount commands containing noflush_merge around the time of crashes.
- flush_cmd_control
- noflush_merge
- fs/f2fs/segment.c
What your security team should do
- Identify all systems using F2FS filesystems and schedule kernel updates
- Audit mount options in fstab and scripts for noflush_merge usage
- Monitor kernel logs for F2FS-related NULL pointer panics as a temporary detection measure
- Prioritize patching on multi-user or shared systems where local access is more likely
The record
fs/f2fs/segment.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and panic) by using a noflush_merge option that triggers a NULL value for a flush_cmd_control data structure.
