What it actually does
The flaw permits a local malicious application to read kernel memory outside its permission boundaries via the UVC driver after first obtaining access to a privileged process.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers who already hold elevated access on affected devices can obtain sensitive information that should remain protected, potentially aiding further attacks or data theft.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first compromises a privileged process on the device, then leverages the UVC driver flaw to read memory contents belonging to other processes or the kernel.
How to fix it
Update chromium-browser on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to version 59.0.3071.109-0ubuntu0.14.04.1186 or later; apply corresponding kernel updates for Android devices running Kernel-3.10 or Kernel-3.18.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed package version matches or exceeds the fixed release and verify that the UVC driver no longer permits unauthorized memory reads through targeted local tests.
Typical attack path
- Gain initial foothold by compromising a privileged process
- Trigger the UVC driver path from the malicious application
- Read kernel or cross-process memory outside permitted bounds
- Exfiltrate disclosed data for further exploitation
How to detect it
Examine system logs for unexpected UVC driver activity originating from untrusted applications and review process privilege-escalation events preceding data-access anomalies.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed chromium-browser update immediately on Ubuntu 14.04 systems
- Inventory all Android devices using the affected kernels and schedule patching
- Review application sandboxing controls to reduce the chance of privileged-process compromise
The record
An information disclosure vulnerability in the kernel UVC driver could enable a local malicious application to access data outside of its permission levels. This issue is rated as Moderate because it first requires compromising a privileged process. Product: Android. Versions: Kernel-3.10, Kernel-3.18. Android ID: A-33300353.
