What it actually does
The flaw allows SO_REUSEPORT on non-inet crypto sockets, permitting alg_sock_destruct to invoke crypto_put_default_null_skcipher (which acquires a mutex) from an RCU callback context during softirq processing, violating kernel locking rules.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected kernels may experience unexpected crashes or instability when certain network socket operations occur, leading to downtime and potential service disruption in high-traffic environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts or reuses sockets with SO_REUSEPORT on crypto/af_alg sockets; during socket release under RCU grace period, the mutex acquisition in the callback triggers a sleeping function violation from atomic/softirq context, resulting in a kernel panic or denial of service.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 219d54332a09e8d8741c1e1982f5eae56099de85 or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image across all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the restricting check for SO_REUSEPORT on inet sockets only; boot the updated kernel and confirm absence of the sleeping-function-in-RCU bug under socket stress tests matching the original report.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or code execution on target Linux system
- Create or manipulate AF_ALG sockets and apply SO_REUSEPORT option
- Trigger socket release paths that schedule RCU callbacks
- Force RCU batch processing during softirq to invoke the destructive callback
- Observe resulting kernel crash or instability
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for 'sleeping function called from invalid context' combined with crypto_put_default_null_skcipher or alg_sock_destruct stack traces; inspect RCU callback activity under high socket churn.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all production Linux hosts within the next maintenance window
- Monitor kernel crash logs for mutex/RCU violations related to crypto sockets
- Restrict unprivileged use of AF_ALG sockets via LSM policies where feasible until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: restrict SO_REUSEPORT to inet sockets After blamed commit, crypto sockets could accidentally be destroyed from RCU call back, as spotted by zyzbot [1]. Trying to acquire a mutex in RCU callback is not allowed. Restrict SO_REUSEPORT socket option to inet sockets. v1 of this patch supported TCP, UDP and SCTP sockets, but fcnal-test.sh test needed RAW and ICMP support.
