What it actually does

The flaw in WebKit permits a remote attacker to read sensitive data from a victim's browser or application context by delivering a specially crafted web page that triggers improper information exposure during rendering or script execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can harvest user credentials, session tokens, or other private data from affected Apple products, leading to account compromise, privacy violations, and potential regulatory exposure for organizations relying on these browsers and media applications.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious website containing crafted HTML, CSS, or JavaScript that targets a WebKit parsing or rendering edge case; when a victim visits the site with an unpatched Safari, iCloud, iTunes, or tvOS client, the browser leaks internal data back to the attacker-controlled server.

How to fix it

Upgrade Safari to version 10.0.1 or later, iCloud to 6.0.1 or later, iTunes to 12.5.2 or later, and tvOS to 10.0.1 or later; apply all subsequent security updates from Apple for the affected products.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify that the installed versions of Safari, iCloud, iTunes, and tvOS meet or exceed the minimum patched releases; test that crafted proof-of-concept pages no longer leak data in a controlled lab environment.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker crafts a web page that exploits WebKit information disclosure logic
  2. Victim is lured to the page via phishing, malicious advertisement, or compromised site
  3. WebKit processes the page and inadvertently exposes sensitive memory or DOM contents
  4. Leaked data is transmitted to the attacker's server for capture and abuse

How to detect it

Review web proxy and browser history logs for visits to suspicious domains around the time of suspected exposure; examine WebKit process memory dumps or crash reports for unexpected data leakage patterns.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all managed Apple devices and endpoints to the fixed versions immediately
  • Block known malicious domains and monitor for WebKit-related crash or data-exfiltration alerts
  • Educate users on avoiding untrusted websites until patches are deployed

The record

An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. Safari before 10.0.1 is affected. iCloud before 6.0.1 is affected. iTunes before 12.5.2 is affected. tvOS before 10.0.1 is affected. The issue involves the "WebKit" component. It allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via a crafted web site.
