Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

Older Apple phones, browsers, and TVs could be taken over or crashed simply by visiting a rigged website, so keeping those systems updated prevents remote attacks.

What it actually does

Remote attackers can trigger memory corruption in WebKit leading to arbitrary code execution or denial of service via crafted web content.

Why it matters to the business

Unpatched older Apple devices and browsers remain exposed to remote compromise or crashes, risking data theft, malware installation, or loss of service availability on legacy systems still in use.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious website containing specially crafted content that triggers the WebKit memory corruption flaw; when a victim using an affected Apple product or browser visits the page, the flaw is triggered allowing code execution or a crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected products to iOS 9.3.2 or later, Safari 9.1.1 or later, tvOS 9.2.1 or later, and apply available patches for WebKitGTK; remove or isolate unsupported legacy instances.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm product versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above and test that crafted test pages no longer trigger crashes or unexpected behavior in updated WebKit instances.

Typical attack path

  1. Host a website with crafted WebKit-triggering content
  2. Lure victim to visit the malicious site via phishing or compromised links
  3. Trigger memory corruption on page load or interaction
  4. Achieve arbitrary code execution or denial of service

How to detect it

Review web browser crash reports and system logs for memory corruption signatures around visits to untrusted sites; examine proxy or firewall logs for access to suspicious domains after the 2016 disclosure date.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrades on any remaining legacy Apple devices or Safari installations
  • Block or monitor traffic to known malicious domains used in historical WebKit exploits
  • Implement web content filtering and browser sandboxing where upgrades are delayed

The record

WebKit, as used in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, Safari before 9.1.1, and tvOS before 9.2.1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than CVE-2016-1855, CVE-2016-1856, and CVE-2016-1857.
