What it actually does

The flaw permits a remote attacker to bypass the Same Origin Policy in WebKit, enabling cross-origin reads of sensitive information from a crafted website without user interaction beyond visiting the page.

Why it matters to the business

Older browser or embedded WebKit components may expose user session data, credentials, or private content across domains, leading to privacy violations and potential regulatory exposure; the issue is long-public with no active exploitation signals and low current prevalence in modern environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious site that uses crafted JavaScript or HTML to trigger the WebKit SOP bypass, causing the victim's browser to leak cross-origin data back to the attacker when the victim loads the page.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected components to the fixed versions listed for each product (kubernetes-1.22 (Chainguard) fixed in 0); apply vendor patches for WebKit-based browsers and embedded engines; disable outdated WebKit renderers where upgrades are unavailable.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed WebKit or browser version matches or exceeds the vendor-supplied fixed release; review release notes for the specific Same Origin Policy fix; perform regression testing with known SOP bypass test cases.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares a website containing the SOP bypass payload
  2. Victim is directed to the attacker-controlled site via phishing or compromised content
  3. Browser processes the crafted page and leaks sensitive cross-origin information
  4. Attacker receives the exfiltrated data on their server

How to detect it

Review web server and browser logs for unusual cross-origin requests or data exfiltration patterns matching the 2017-era WebKit behavior; examine historical proxy or endpoint logs around the publication date for suspicious JavaScript or iframe activity from untrusted domains.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all systems using WebKit or the listed affected products and prioritize upgrades
  • Block or sandbox legacy browser versions that cannot be updated
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any future changes in exploit availability

The record

An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. iOS before 10.2.1 is affected. Safari before 10.0.3 is affected. tvOS before 10.1.1 is affected. The issue involves the "WebKit" component. It allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and obtain sensitive information via a crafted web site.
