What it actually does
The vulnerability permits command injection when Bash 4.3 expands the '\h' sequence in the PS1 prompt string, interpreting shell metacharacters embedded in a machine hostname as executable commands.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can grant remote code execution within affected automation and deployment tooling, potentially disrupting container orchestration workflows and allowing unauthorized control over infrastructure components; the issue affects a small number of packages with fixes available for over eight years and shows no active ransomware usage or CISA KEV listing.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a hostname containing shell metacharacters to a target machine; when a remote authenticated user session renders a prompt containing '\h', Bash performs unintended command execution during prompt expansion. Threat actor references to GNU Bash OS Command Injection Vulnerability provide historical context but no named APT campaigns are tied to active use.
How to fix it
Upgrade flux-helm-controller (Chainguard) to 0.37.4-r3 or later and flux-helm-controller (Wolfi) to 0.37.4-r3 or later; additionally review and sanitize any custom PS1 prompts that include '\h' and consider disabling hostname expansion where feasible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed package versions against the fixed releases, test prompt rendering with a benign hostname containing metacharacters in a lab environment, and confirm absence of the vulnerable Bash 4.3 behavior after upgrades.
Typical attack path
- Locate systems or containers using Bash with '\h' in the prompt configuration
- Influence or set a hostname containing shell metacharacters on the target
- Trigger an interactive or non-interactive shell session that expands the prompt
- Execute arbitrary commands via the injected metacharacters
How to detect it
Review authentication and shell history logs for sessions where hostnames contain unusual characters such as backticks, dollar signs, or semicolons; examine process execution traces around prompt rendering in affected controllers.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed versions immediately to eliminate the exposure
- Audit prompt configurations across all Bash-using workloads for unsafe escape sequences
- Monitor EPSS and threat intelligence for any future uptick given the stable low score
- Restrict ability of remote users to control hostnames used in shell environments
The record
The expansion of '\h' in the prompt string in bash 4.3 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via shell metacharacters placed in 'hostname' of a machine.
