What it actually does

The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by injecting malicious code into environment variables processed by Bash, due to improper handling of trailing strings after malformed function definitions.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control over affected systems across widespread Linux environments, leading to data breaches, service disruptions, and potential ransomware deployment; the long-standing KEV status and high ecosystem prevalence amplify operational risk for unpatched deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious environment variable containing a function definition followed by arbitrary commands; when Bash processes this variable in contexts such as CGI scripts, SSH ForceCommand, or DHCP clients, the injected commands execute with the privileges of the Bash process, as demonstrated by active in-the-wild exploitation.

How to fix it

Upgrade GNU Bash to a patched version beyond bash43-025 and apply security updates from distribution vendors for affected products such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise, Debian, and others; prioritize systems exposed to the internet given the 2022 KEV due date.

How to confirm the fix worked

Test by running the environment variable test commands that previously triggered the vulnerability to confirm they no longer execute injected commands; verify Bash version is updated and scan for affected packages across the environment.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a service that passes user-controlled input into environment variables processed by Bash
  2. Craft a payload with malformed function definition followed by command injection
  3. Send the payload via HTTP request, SSH, or other vector crossing privilege boundary
  4. Execute arbitrary commands on the target system

How to detect it

Examine web server logs, SSH daemon logs, and DHCP client logs for suspicious environment variable patterns or commands in headers; check for unusual processes spawned by web servers or SSH daemons and look for file modifications following environment variable processing.

  • () { :;};
  • (){:;};
  • bash -c
  • HTTP_USER_AGENT containing function definitions

What your security team should do

  • Immediately patch all affected systems to the latest Bash versions from vendors
  • Monitor for any remaining unpatched systems due to the high exploitation rate and KEV listing
  • Review historical logs for signs of prior exploitation and restrict environment variable processing where possible

The record

GNU Bash through 4.3 bash43-025 processes trailing strings after certain malformed function definitions in the values of environment variables, which allows remote attackers to write to files or possibly have unknown other impact via a crafted environment, as demonstrated by vectors involving the ForceCommand feature in OpenSSH sshd, the mod_cgi and mod_cgid modules in the Apache HTTP Server, scripts executed by unspecified DHCP clients, and other situations in which setting the environment occurs across a privilege boundary from Bash execution. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2014-6271.
