What it actually does
The flaw allows remote attackers to inject and execute arbitrary commands or trigger memory corruption by supplying crafted function definitions inside environment variable values that Bash parses incorrectly across privilege boundaries.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running unpatched Bash can be fully compromised, enabling attackers to steal data, install persistent malware, or disrupt services in web servers, SSH gateways, DHCP clients, and other environments where environment variables cross trust boundaries; the high exploit availability and unchanged EPSS score after a decade indicate ongoing risk to any remaining legacy deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker identifies a vector that passes attacker-controlled data into Bash environment variables (such as HTTP headers processed by CGI scripts or SSH ForceCommand), embeds a malicious function definition that bypasses the incomplete parsing fixes from prior CVEs, and causes Bash to execute attacker-supplied commands or corrupt memory.
How to fix it
Upgrade GNU Bash to a version containing complete fixes for environment variable parsing beyond bash43-026; disable unnecessary CGI or ForceCommand features until patches are applied; apply vendor-supplied updates for any dependent products.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed Bash version is newer than the vulnerable releases, re-test with known environment-variable function-definition test cases, and confirm that no untrusted input reaches Bash across privilege boundaries.
Typical attack path
- Locate an entry point that sets environment variables from untrusted input before invoking Bash
- Craft a payload containing a function definition followed by command injection syntax
- Deliver the payload via the chosen vector (HTTP, SSH, DHCP, etc.)
- Trigger Bash execution to achieve code execution or denial of service
How to detect it
Search web server access logs, SSH authentication logs, and DHCP client logs for environment variable values containing function definitions or unusual command sequences; inspect process execution history for Bash invocations preceded by suspicious environment setup.

What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all systems using GNU Bash and prioritize patching where internet-facing services or remote access paths exist
- Block or sanitize environment-variable sources in web servers, SSH configurations, and DHCP clients
- Monitor EPSS trend and exploit availability; treat as high priority despite age due to persistent exploit code
The record
GNU Bash through 4.3 bash43-026 does not properly parse function definitions in the values of environment variables, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory access, and untrusted-pointer read and write operations) via a crafted environment, as demonstrated by vectors involving the ForceCommand feature in OpenSSH sshd, the mod_cgi and mod_cgid modules in the Apache HTTP Server, scripts executed by unspecified DHCP clients, and other situations in which setting the environment occurs across a privilege boundary from Bash execution. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-7169.
