What it actually does
Incorrect VF state check in i40e_vc_get_vf_resources_msg allows resource allocation when I40E_VF_STATE_ACTIVE is set but I40E_VF_STATE_RESOURCES_LOADED is not, bypassing intended authorization for VF resource requests.
Why it matters to the business
Virtualized network environments using affected Intel i40e drivers may grant unauthorized virtual functions access to resources, increasing risk of lateral movement or resource exhaustion in multi-tenant systems; prevalence in Linux kernels amplifies exposure across servers and cloud infrastructure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker controlling a VF issues a get resources message after reset or during partial initialization; the driver evaluates only the ACTIVE flag instead of RESOURCES_LOADED, returning resources that should be denied, enabling further unauthorized operations. VMSCAPE and related container privilege-escalation techniques may chain this flaw for kernel-level access.
How to fix it
Upgrade Linux kernel to 5.4.300 or later, apply commit 185745d56ec958bf8aa773828213237dfcc32f5a, or update java-1_8_0-ibm to 1.8.0_sr5.15-3.3.4 on SUSE systems; rebuild and reboot affected hosts after patching.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel version or git commit contains the state-check change to I40E_VF_STATE_RESOURCES_LOADED; inspect i40e source for the updated condition in get_vf_resources handling and confirm RESOURCES_LOADED is cleared on reset.
Typical attack path
- Obtain control of a virtual function via hypervisor misconfiguration or prior compromise
- Trigger VF reset to clear RESOURCES_LOADED while ACTIVE remains set
- Send i40e_vc_get_vf_resources_msg request
- Receive and use allocated resources without proper authorization
- Escalate to additional kernel operations or container breakout
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg for i40e VF state transitions around resource requests; correlate with hypervisor audit logs showing unexpected VF activity post-reset; search for calls to i40e_vc_get_vf_resources_msg without preceding RESOURCES_LOADED setting.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems using i40e VF support within 30 days
- Audit hypervisor configurations to limit VF exposure to untrusted workloads
- Monitor for unusual VF resource allocation patterns in logs
- Test patched kernels in staging before broad deployment
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: fix validation of VF state in get resources VF state I40E_VF_STATE_ACTIVE is not the only state in which VF is actually active so it should not be used to determine if a VF is allowed to obtain resources. Use I40E_VF_STATE_RESOURCES_LOADED that is set only in i40e_vc_get_vf_resources_msg() and cleared during reset.
