What it actually does
Missing upper bound validation on the number of filters a virtual function (VF) may request in the i40e driver allows an unprivileged VF to supply a value exceeding the driver's internal maximum, bypassing the intended resource limit.
Why it matters to the business
Unpatched systems risk resource exhaustion or crashes in network drivers when untrusted virtual machines or containers issue malformed filter requests, increasing downtime and operational overhead for Linux hosts running affected kernel versions; low exploit probability reduces immediate urgency but kernel-wide exposure still warrants prompt patching.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with control of a VF (for example via a compromised container or guest) crafts a request specifying more filters than the driver expects; without the boundary check the request proceeds, potentially leading to excessive memory allocation or array overruns that an adversary could leverage for denial of service or, in theory, further memory corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 9176e18681cb0d34c5acc87bda224f5652af2ab8 or later; for SUSE Linux Enterprise products apply the packages fixed in version 2.0.2-4.5.1 where applicable; reboot or reload the i40e module after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the cited commit or is newer than the vulnerable release; inspect i40e source for the added max-filter boundary test; attempt to request an excessive number of filters from a VF and verify the request is now rejected.
Typical attack path
- Obtain control of a VF through guest or container compromise
- Issue an i40e VF filter request with a count exceeding the intended maximum
- Trigger the unchecked code path inside the driver
- Cause resource exhaustion or kernel instability
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for i40e driver warnings or oops messages related to filter allocation; examine audit logs for unexpected VF configuration changes; correlate with container or VM activity that precedes driver instability.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing i40e VFs to untrusted workloads
- Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any future rise in exploit activity
- Restrict VF creation to trusted tenants until patches are deployed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: add max boundary check for VF filters There is no check for max filters that VF can request. Add it.
