What it actually does
Use-after-free in l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen() caused by a race between bt_accept_dequeue() and l2cap_sock_release() when multiple threads hold references to the same socket without consistent lock_sock() protection during list iteration and unlinking.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or potential local privilege escalation on Linux systems with Bluetooth enabled, leading to denial of service, system instability, and possible unauthorized code execution on affected hosts and virtualized environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers concurrent L2CAP socket close and accept operations; one thread releases the socket while another still holds a reference, allowing the freed socket to be touched during bt_accept_dequeue() under release_sock(), resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for escalation or DoS.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to version 5.4.299 or later commit 964cbb198f9c46c2b2358cd1faffc04c1e8248cf; for Debian qemu packages update to 2.1+dfsg-1 on versions 11-14. Disable Bluetooth when not required as a temporary mitigation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed kernel version is at least 5.4.299 and contains the referenced commit; confirm absence of the race by reviewing l2cap_sock_release() locking changes; test with syzkaller-style Bluetooth socket fuzzing if feasible.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a Linux system with Bluetooth stack active
- Create and enqueue L2CAP sockets via bt_accept_enqueue()
- Trigger concurrent close() from one thread and bt_accept_dequeue() from another
- Exploit resulting UAF during spinlock operations in release_sock()
- Corrupt kernel memory to achieve privilege escalation or cause panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports mentioning l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen, bt_accept_dequeue, release_sock, or do_raw_spin_lock; inspect task_work and syscall exit paths in crash dumps for Bluetooth socket activity.
- l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen
- bt_accept_dequeue
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free
- debug_spin_lock_before
- release_sock
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel and qemu package updates to all affected systems without delay
- Disable Bluetooth interfaces via rfkill or kernel configuration where Bluetooth is unnecessary
- Monitor kernel logs for KASAN or slab-use-after-free reports involving l2cap_sock functions
- Review and restrict local user access to Bluetooth sockets via LSM policies
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: Fix use-after-free in l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen() syzbot reported the splat below without a repro. In the splat, a single thread calling bt_accept_dequeue() freed sk and touched it after that. The root cause would be the racy l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen() call added by the cited commit. bt_accept_dequeue() is called under lock_sock() except for l2cap_sock_release(). Two threads could see the same socket during the list iteration in bt_accept_dequeue(): CPU1 CPU2 (close()) ---- ---- sock_hold(sk) sock_hold(sk); lock_sock(sk) <-- block close() sock_put(sk) bt_accept_unlink(sk) sock_put(sk) <-- refcnt by bt_accept_enqueue() release_sock(sk) lock_sock(sk) sock_put(sk) bt_accept_unlink(sk) sock_put(sk) <-- last refcnt bt_accept_unlink(sk) <-- UAF Depending on the timing, the other thread could show up in the "Freed by task" part. Let's call l2cap_sock_cleanup_listen() under lock_sock() in l2cap_sock_release().
