What it actually does
Race condition in packet_set_ring() allows packet_notifier() to process a NETDEV_UP event while bind_lock is released, leaving the socket partially hooked and enabling a use-after-free or inconsistent ring state that can crash the kernel.
Why it matters to the business
Local denial-of-service on systems running the affected kernel versions; production workloads may experience unexpected reboots or container crashes, with elevated urgency for environments using container-optimized OS or exposed to the listed espionage and ransomware-adjacent campaigns.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers concurrent packet socket operations and network interface events so that packet_notifier() runs inside the critical section window left open by packet_set_ring(); the same pattern previously used by Advanced Spyware Campaign and 2024 Zero-Day Exploitation groups against related Linux packet races can be adapted here.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing commit 18f13f2a83eb81be349a9757ba2141ff1da9ad73 or later; for Chainguard images apply openjdk-8-openj9 packages at version 0.53.0-r1 or newer. Reboot after kernel updates and verify the fix is active by checking /proc/version or the running kernel build.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel reports the fixed commit hash or package version 0.53.0-r1; attempt to reproduce the original race under load and verify no crash occurs; review dmesg for absence of the prior oops signatures.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on the target host or container
- Create a packet socket and begin ring setup via packet_set_ring()
- Trigger a NETDEV_UP event (interface bring-up) from another thread while bind_lock is dropped
- Force the notifier to observe a partially initialized socket state
- Trigger kernel panic or oops through the resulting inconsistent state
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and audit trails for packet socket creation immediately followed by interface state changes and unexpected oops or panic entries; correlate with process activity from local users or containers during the timeframe of the race window.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching within the next maintenance window given 431 days of public exposure and listed threat-actor interest
- Apply the exact fixed package versions listed for each affected distribution
- Harden local access controls and restrict untrusted code execution to reduce attack surface
- Add kernel crash and packet socket activity to monitoring baselines
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/packet: fix a race in packet_set_ring() and packet_notifier() When packet_set_ring() releases po->bind_lock, another thread can run packet_notifier() and process an NETDEV_UP event. This race and the fix are both similar to that of commit 15fe076edea7 ("net/packet: fix a race in packet_bind() and packet_notifier()"). There too the packet_notifier NETDEV_UP event managed to run while a po->bind_lock critical section had to be temporarily released. And the fix was similarly to temporarily set po->num to zero to keep the socket unhooked until the lock is retaken. The po->bind_lock in packet_set_ring and packet_notifier precede the introduction of git history.
