What it actually does
Unchecked userspace integer value used directly as shift amount in bit operation for IRQ validation, allowing negative or out-of-bounds shifts in comedi das6402 driver.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability or crashes on affected systems using das6402 hardware for data acquisition, increasing downtime and operational risk in environments with high Linux kernel prevalence.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker with local access supplies out-of-range value via it->options[1] during device configuration to trigger unsafe bit shift; listed threat actors involved in related Linux kernel privilege escalations may leverage similar input validation flaws.
How to fix it
Apply kernel patch requiring options[1] bounds check before shift; update to fixed versions such as imagemagick/imagemagick commit 83b6fc338ae1d38602eb5f6b307393adc3a0e1a7 or imagemagick/imagemagick6 commit 61bc270b01a4632a885698ab36055292737073a2 where applicable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains bounds check on it->options[1] in range [0,15] prior to shift; test with valid/invalid IRQ values to ensure no out-of-bounds access.
Typical attack path
- Locate system with comedi das6402 driver loaded
- Prepare userspace call with invalid options[1] value outside [0,15]
- Trigger IRQ configuration check
- Induce out-of-bounds shift leading to crash or undefined behavior
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for shift-related warnings or oops in comedi das6402 module; inspect userspace calls passing options array to comedi; correlate with activity from listed threat actors exploiting similar kernel issues.
- comedi das6402 bit shift
- it->options[1] out of bounds
- IRQ validation 0x8cec
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching kernel on systems using comedi drivers given 456 days since publication and rising EPSS trend
- Audit for das6402 usage in data acquisition deployments
- Monitor for related Linux kernel privilege escalation campaigns listed in threat actors
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: comedi: das6402: Fix bit shift out of bounds When checking for a supported IRQ number, the following test is used: /* IRQs 2,3,5,6,7, 10,11,15 are valid for "enhanced" mode */ if ((1 << it->options[1]) & 0x8cec) { However, `it->options[i]` is an unchecked `int` value from userspace, so the shift amount could be negative or out of bounds. Fix the test by requiring `it->options[1]` to be within bounds before proceeding with the original test. Valid `it->options[1]` values that select the IRQ will be in the range [1,15]. The value 0 explicitly disables the use of interrupts.
