What it actually does

Improper rollback of software resources during RDMA RQ destruction when a firmware command fails leaves the object in an inconsistent state, enabling a subsequent destruction attempt to trigger a refcount underflow and use-after-free in the mlx5_ib driver.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using RDMA over mlx5 hardware may experience kernel crashes or instability during work queue teardown under firmware error conditions, increasing operational risk on affected Linux deployments especially in high-availability or virtualized environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers firmware failure during RQ destruction, then re-invokes destruction through userspace RDMA interfaces; the missing rollback allows a second free path that underflows the refcount and leads to use-after-free, potentially for denial of service or further kernel exploitation.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 26d2f662d3a6655a82fd8a287e8b1ce471567f36 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; for distributions such as Mageia 8 apply the fixed schroot package 1.7.2-18.1.mga8 or equivalent kernel update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 26d2f662d3a6655a82fd8a287e8b1ce471567f36; attempt RQ destruction under simulated firmware failure and verify absence of refcount_warn_saturate warnings and mlx5_ib_destroy_wq traces.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access on a system with mlx5 RDMA hardware
  2. Exercise RDMA work queue creation and trigger firmware command failure path
  3. Re-invoke destruction via ib_uverbs or rdma_cm interfaces
  4. Observe refcount underflow and use-after-free in mlx5_core_put_rsc and related functions

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for strings indicating refcount underflow during mlx5_ib work queue destruction; inspect crash dumps or kdump output for call traces containing mlx5_core_put_rsc, mlx5_core_destroy_rq_tracked, and ib_destroy_wq_user.

  • refcount_t: underflow; use-after-free
  • mlx5_core_put_rsc+0x88/0xa0 [mlx5_ib]
  • mlx5_core_destroy_rq_tracked+0x64/0x98 [mlx5_ib]
  • mlx5_ib_destroy_wq+0x34/0x80 [mlx5_ib]

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing RDMA/mlx5 interfaces within the next maintenance window
  • Monitor kernel logs for refcount underflow warnings involving mlx5_ib
  • Restrict untrusted local access to RDMA devices until patches are applied

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/mlx5: Fix error flow upon firmware failure for RQ destruction Upon RQ destruction if the firmware command fails which is the last resource to be destroyed some SW resources were already cleaned regardless of the failure. Now properly rollback the object to its original state upon such failure. In order to avoid a use-after free in case someone tries to destroy the object again, which results in the following kernel trace: refcount_t: underflow; use-after-free.
