What it actually does
Division by zero in nd_label_data_init() when config_size (derived from CXL Identify Memory Device LSA size) is zero, causing kernel oops.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crash on systems using affected CXL memory devices, leading to downtime and potential loss of workloads until reboot or device replacement.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies or emulates a CXL memory device that returns a zero LSA size in response to CXL Command 4000h; the libnvdimm driver stores this zero value, sets max_xfer to zero, and later performs DIV_ROUND_UP() which triggers the divide error during label data initialization.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2bd4a938d2eda96ab7288b8fa5aae84a1de8c4ca or later; ensure CXL devices report non-zero LSA sizes.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the fix; test with a CXL device reporting zero LSA size and verify no divide error occurs; review dmesg for absence of nd_label_data_init oops.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or emulate a CXL device reporting LSA size of zero
- Attach or present the device to a vulnerable Linux system
- Trigger nd_label_data_init() via CXL pmem driver initialization
- Cause kernel divide error and oops
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for 'divide error' combined with 'nd_label_data_init' or CXL pmem initialization failures; inspect dmesg and syslog for Oops involving libnvdimm.
- divide error: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI
- RIP: 0010:nd_label_data_init+0x10e/0x800 [libnvdimm]
- Oops.*libnvdimm
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems with CXL memory devices
- Monitor for kernel oops involving libnvdimm
- Validate CXL device firmware and reported LSA sizes
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: libnvdimm/labels: Fix divide error in nd_label_data_init() If a faulty CXL memory device returns a broken zero LSA size in its memory device information (Identify Memory Device (Opcode 4000h), CXL spec. 3.1, 8.2.9.9.1.1), a divide error occurs in the libnvdimm driver: Oops: divide error: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI RIP: 0010:nd_label_data_init+0x10e/0x800 [libnvdimm] Code and flow: 1) CXL Command 4000h returns LSA size = 0 2) config_size is assigned to zero LSA size (CXL pmem driver): drivers/cxl/pmem.c: .config_size = mds->lsa_size, 3) max_xfer is set to zero (nvdimm driver): drivers/nvdimm/label.c: max_xfer = min_t(size_t, ndd->nsarea.max_xfer, config_size); 4) A subsequent DIV_ROUND_UP() causes a division by zero: drivers/nvdimm/label.c: /* Make our initial read size a multiple of max_xfer size */ drivers/nvdimm/label.c: read_size = min(DIV_ROUND_UP(read_size, max_xfer) * max_xfer, drivers/nvdimm/label.c- config_size); Fix this by checking the config size parameter by extending an existing check.
