What it actually does

The vulnerability is an authorization bypass in the InnoDB component that permits a high-privileged network attacker to perform unauthorized insert, update, or delete operations on some MySQL Server data.

Why it matters to the business

Affected database deployments face risk of selective data tampering by privileged accounts, which can produce compliance failures, corrupted business records, and require costly integrity verification and recovery work.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker obtains high-privileged credentials, connects to the MySQL Server over any supported network protocol, and exploits the InnoDB authorization flaw to modify selected data without triggering normal access controls.

How to fix it

Upgrade MySQL Server to versions after 8.0.41, 8.4.4, or 9.2.0; on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS systems apply the listed kernel package fixes (linux-ibm-5.15 to 5.15.0-1063.66~20.04.1 and linux-oracle-5.15 to 5.15.0-1068.74~20.04.1).

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm MySQL Server version exceeds the affected ranges and verify the exact Ubuntu kernel package versions listed in the fixed_versions field are installed on all impacted hosts.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain or compromise high-privileged MySQL account with network access
  2. Establish authenticated connection via supported protocols
  3. Trigger the InnoDB authorization bypass
  4. Execute unauthorized data modifications

How to detect it

Examine MySQL audit and general query logs for data modification statements executed by high-privileged accounts that appear outside expected change windows or from unusual source addresses.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the published fixed package versions immediately on all affected systems
  • Restrict network access and review high-privileged MySQL accounts
  • Enable enhanced auditing of data modification operations by privileged users

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: InnoDB). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.0-8.0.41, 8.4.0-8.4.4 and 9.0.0-9.2.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Server accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 2.7 (Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N).
