What it actually does

Flaw in InnoDB component permits high-privileged network attacker to trigger complete denial of service via hang or repeatable crash and perform unauthorized data modifications.

Why it matters to the business

Database downtime and potential data corruption can interrupt operations; limited to high-privileged insiders but still requires prompt patching given widespread MySQL deployments.

How an attack unfolds

Attacker obtains high-privileged network credentials, connects to MySQL via supported protocols, and sends crafted requests that abuse the InnoDB vulnerability to induce crash or alter data.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected MySQL installations to versions beyond 8.0.41, 8.4.4, or 9.2.0; for linux-xilinx-zynqmp on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS apply kernel package 5.15.0-1035.39 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify MySQL server version is no longer in the affected ranges and confirm InnoDB stability under load; review release notes for the applied fix.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain high-privileged network access to MySQL instance
  2. Establish connection using multiple protocols
  3. Send malicious requests targeting InnoDB component
  4. Induce hang/crash or perform unauthorized data changes

How to detect it

Examine MySQL error logs for repeated InnoDB crashes or hangs, audit privileged user queries for unexpected data modifications, and correlate with network connection records.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed package versions immediately
  • Restrict high-privileged network access to MySQL
  • Monitor for unusual InnoDB crashes or data anomalies
  • Review privileged account activity logs

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: InnoDB). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.0-8.0.41, 8.4.0-8.4.4 and 9.0.0-9.2.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server as well as unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Server accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.5 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H).
