What it actually does

Local memory corruption in the gelf_getsymshndx function within eu-strip's strip.c causes the process to crash when processing a specially crafted ELF file.

Why it matters to the business

Developers or build systems that run eu-strip on untrusted ELF binaries can experience unexpected crashes, disrupting compilation, packaging, or forensic workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malformed ELF file that triggers the flaw in gelf_getsymshndx, then supplies the file to eu-strip on a local system; the tool crashes, resulting in denial of service. The exploit has been publicly disclosed.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream patch identified by commit fbf1df9ca286de3323ae541973b08449f8d03aba or upgrade to a version of elfutils that contains the fix. Rebuild any locally packaged tools that embed the vulnerable code.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed elfutils version is newer than 0.192 and contains commit fbf1df9ca286de3323ae541973b08449f8d03aba; test eu-strip against known crashing inputs to verify absence of the crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a malicious ELF file that exercises the vulnerable code path in gelf_getsymshndx
  2. Invoke eu-strip locally against the crafted file
  3. Observe process termination or crash

How to detect it

Review system and application logs for unexpected eu-strip crashes or segmentation faults when processing ELF files; correlate with file creation or download events preceding the crash.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory systems that ship or invoke eu-strip and prioritize patching where ELF processing occurs on untrusted inputs
  • Add eu-strip to the list of tools scanned for updates in build and CI environments
  • Monitor upstream elfutils releases for any follow-on fixes

The record

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNU elfutils 0.192. This issue affects the function gelf_getsymshndx of the file strip.c of the component eu-strip. The manipulation leads to denial of service. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The identifier of the patch is fbf1df9ca286de3323ae541973b08449f8d03aba. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.
