What it actually does

The allocate_elf function in elfutils fails to handle a specially crafted ELF binary, resulting in a memory allocation failure that crashes the process.

Why it matters to the business

Service or application downtime when users or automated processes open the malicious file, with higher urgency for organizations still running the vulnerable version after many years.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malformed ELF file and delivers it to a target system; when the file is processed by the vulnerable elfutils library the allocation failure triggers a crash, causing denial of service. No known threat actors or ransomware campaigns have exploited this issue.

How to fix it

Upgrade elfutils to version 0.168 or later; for affected Bitnami WordPress deployments, upgrade to version 5.9.10 or newer.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed elfutils version is 0.168 or greater and test that the application no longer crashes when processing the previously crashing ELF sample.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a malformed ELF file that triggers excessive or failing memory allocation
  2. Deliver the file to a system running vulnerable elfutils (local file, email attachment, or web upload)
  3. Trigger processing of the file through normal application workflows requiring user interaction
  4. Observe crash and denial of service

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected crashes or segmentation faults occurring when ELF files are processed; look for process terminations around file-handling routines in older elfutils builds.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all instances of elfutils and the affected Bitnami WordPress package to the stated fixed versions
  • Scan internal package inventories for any remaining pre-0.168 elfutils binaries
  • Add the vulnerable library to patch-management exception lists until remediation is complete

The record

The allocate_elf function in common.h in elfutils before 0.168 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted ELF file, which triggers a memory allocation failure.
