What it actually does

An excessively long dashboard title or panel name triggers improper input validation that causes Chromium-based browsers to become unresponsive.

Why it matters to the business

Staff using monitoring dashboards experience browser freezes that interrupt operational visibility and require browser restarts or machine reboots.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with administrative access creates or modifies a dashboard containing an extremely long title or panel name; when a user opens the dashboard in a Chromium browser the rendering engine hangs, producing a denial-of-service condition for that user.

How to fix it

Upgrade Grafana to version 11.6.2 or later; restrict dashboard creation privileges to trusted administrators until the upgrade is complete.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Grafana version is 11.6.2 or higher; attempt to load a dashboard containing a title of several thousand characters and verify the browser remains responsive.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain administrative privileges in Grafana
  2. Create or edit a dashboard and set an excessively long title or panel name
  3. Induce or wait for users to view the dashboard in a Chromium browser

How to detect it

Search Grafana logs and database for dashboard or panel titles exceeding several thousand characters; review access logs for repeated loads of the same dashboard from multiple users that coincide with browser crash reports.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 11.6.2 update immediately on all instances
  • Audit existing dashboards for unusually long titles and shorten or remove them
  • Limit dashboard edit rights to a minimal set of trusted users

The record

In Grafana, an excessively long dashboard title or panel name will cause Chromium browsers to become unresponsive due to Improper Input Validation vulnerability in Grafana. This issue affects Grafana: before 11.6.2 and is fixed in 11.6.2 and higher.
