What it actually does
The flaw permits an attacker-controlled webpage to write arbitrary data to the browser clipboard without triggering or respecting the standard user permission prompt, by exploiting a specific sequence of navigational events that bypasses the authorization check.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations face increased risk of social-engineering or data-manipulation attacks that succeed without user interaction, potentially leading to credential theft, malware distribution, or loss of user trust in browser-based workflows.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious page that performs rapid navigation and history manipulation events; during the resulting transient state the clipboard write permission check is skipped, allowing silent population of the clipboard with attacker-chosen content that the user may later paste elsewhere.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 129 or later, Firefox ESR to 128.3 or later, and Thunderbird to 128.3 or later. Enforce automatic browser updates through enterprise policy where possible and verify the installed version after patching.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the browser reports a version at or above the fixed releases listed above; re-test the affected navigation sequence in a lab environment to ensure the permission prompt is again required for clipboard writes.
Typical attack path
- User visits attacker-controlled page via phishing, malicious advertisement, or compromised site
- Page triggers a crafted sequence of location changes, history pushes, and focus events
- Clipboard-write API call executes without the normal permission prompt or user gesture requirement
- Clipboard now contains attacker data that the user may inadvertently paste into other applications or forms
How to detect it
Review browser process creation logs, extension activity, and navigation telemetry for rapid successive history or location changes originating from external domains; correlate with any clipboard-related API calls that lack corresponding user-gesture records.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of the fixed browser releases across all managed endpoints within the next patching cycle
- Monitor internal vulnerability scanners and EDR telemetry for outdated Firefox or Thunderbird instances
- Educate users on the risks of pasting clipboard contents from untrusted sources even after the fix is applied
The record
An attacker could write data to the user's clipboard, bypassing the user prompt, during a certain sequence of navigational events. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 129, Firefox ESR < 128.3, and Thunderbird < 128.3.
