CVE-2024-7527

What it actually does

A use-after-free condition arises when work is unexpectedly marked at the start of a sweeping operation in the JavaScript engine, allowing a dangling pointer to be dereferenced after the underlying object has been freed.

Attackers can gain full control of a user's browser or email client, leading to data theft, credential capture, or deployment of additional malware across an organization until patches are applied.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious webpage or email that triggers the sweeping-phase marking error in the browser's JavaScript engine; when the victim loads the content the freed object is reused, enabling arbitrary code execution. Exploitation has been observed in campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors targeting Mozilla products.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to version 129 or later, Firefox ESR to 115.14 or 128.1 or later, and Thunderbird to 128.1 or 115.14 or later. Where immediate updates are not possible, restrict JavaScript execution via enterprise policies or isolate browser usage.

Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above; re-test affected functionality with updated builds and monitor vendor security advisories for regression issues.

Typical attack path

1. Attacker prepares a specially crafted webpage or HTML email exploiting the sweeping marking flaw
2. Victim is lured to visit the page or open the message in an affected Firefox or Thunderbird version
3. The use-after-free is triggered during garbage collection, corrupting memory
4. Attacker's shellcode executes with the privileges of the browser process
5. Further actions such as credential theft or lateral movement occur

How to detect it

Examine browser and Thunderbird crash logs for entries referencing garbage-collection or sweeping operations; correlate with network logs showing visits to previously unknown domains around the time of any process anomalies.
