What it actually does

Missing attribute value validation in editor code permits an out-of-bounds read, exposing adjacent memory contents and enabling memory corruption.

Why it matters to the business

Remote attackers can read sensitive process memory or achieve code execution in widely deployed browsers and email clients, risking data theft, credential compromise, and malware deployment across user bases.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts malicious HTML or message content containing a specially formed attribute that bypasses the editor's bounds check. When the victim renders the content, the out-of-bounds read occurs, allowing leakage of memory that can be leveraged to bypass ASLR or construct a full exploit chain. Threat actors have included this class of flaw in 2024 espionage and financially motivated campaigns targeting Mozilla products.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to version 129 or later, Firefox ESR to 115.14 or 128.1 or later, and Thunderbird to 115.14 or 128.1 or later. Apply updates immediately given the high CVSS and observed exploitation of similar memory issues by espionage actors.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above; re-test with proof-of-concept content that previously triggered the OOB condition and verify absence of memory errors in debug builds.

Typical attack path

1. Attacker prepares malicious web page or email with crafted attribute value
2. Victim opens the content in an affected Firefox or Thunderbird version
3. Editor code performs unchecked attribute access resulting in out-of-bounds read
4. Attacker uses leaked memory to defeat mitigations and execute arbitrary code

How to detect it

Review browser and system crash logs for memory access violations around editor component activity; correlate with web or email content received immediately prior to any anomalous process behavior.

• Block untrusted email rendering and web content until updates are deployed
• Monitor threat intelligence feeds for continued exploitation of Mozilla memory flaws
