What it actually does
Missing length check on skb before dereferencing skb->data in nr_route_frame allows out-of-bounds or uninitialized memory access during AX.25 address comparison when processing undersized IEEE 802.15.4 frames.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory disclosure or crash on systems using netrom over IEEE 802.15.4 can lead to denial of service, information leaks, or potential local privilege escalation; organizations running affected kernels must prioritize updates due to the widespread use of Linux in embedded and network devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a short raw IEEE 802.15.4 frame and sends it via a netrom socket; the kernel allocates an skb whose actual length is smaller than expected, nr_route_frame reads past the valid data into uninitialized memory, and ax25cmp consumes the invalid value, triggering the KMSAN report or worse memory corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 64e9f54a14f2887be8634fb85cd2f13bec18a184 or later; apply the skb->len validation patch in net/netrom/nr_route.c before any field access.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the length check 'if (skb->len < ...)' at the start of nr_route_frame; run syzkaller or similar fuzzing targeting ieee802154 raw sockets and verify no KMSAN reports; check kernel version against the fixed commit hash.
Typical attack path
- Create a raw IEEE 802.15.4 socket and bind it to a netrom interface
- Allocate a minimal skb via sendmsg without sufficient payload
- Trigger nr_xmit -> nr_route_frame path
- Read uninitialized value in ax25cmp leading to crash or info leak
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KMSAN reports referencing ax25cmp and nr_route_frame; inspect raw_sendmsg and ieee802154 socket activity for unusually small frames; review audit logs for processes using AF_IEEE802154 sockets with netrom routing enabled.
- BUG: KMSAN: uninit-value in ax25cmp
- nr_route_frame+0x1a2
- nr_dev_get+0x20e
- raw_sendmsg.*ieee802154
What your security team should do
- Immediately identify all systems running vulnerable kernel versions and schedule reboot after applying the fixed commit
- Enable kernel memory sanitizers (KMSAN/KASAN) in test environments to catch similar issues
- Monitor for upstream stable releases that backport 64e9f54a14f2887be8634fb85cd2f13bec18a184
- Restrict raw socket access for unprivileged users where netrom/ieee802154 is not required

This hides an actual issue, which is that nr_route_frame does not validate the buffer size before using it. Fix this issue by checking skb->len before accessing any fields in skb->data.
