What it actually does
Use-after-free when an RDMA/rxe workqueue task (ib_cache_event_task) dereferences a net_device pointer that was freed after a device unregister event but before the queued task executed, leading to slab-use-after-free in dev_get_flags during rxe_query_port.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or memory corruption on Linux systems using soft RDMA (RXE) over network devices, causing denial of service; high prevalence in kernel-dependent environments increases operational risk of unplanned downtime.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers rapid net_device register/unregister events (e.g., via virtual interfaces or teaming) while RDMA cache update tasks are queued; the freed device is then accessed in the delayed ib_cache_event_task, causing the use-after-free.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit 32ca3557d968e662957131374a5f81c9c9cdbba8 or later; apply the equivalent fix that removes the direct net_device link in rxe (modeled after the siw patch).
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patch is present by checking git log for 32ca3557d968e662957131374a5f81c9c9cdbba8 in drivers/infiniband/sw/rxe; recompile and test that ib_cache_event_task no longer holds direct net_device references after device removal.
Typical attack path
- Create or manipulate network interfaces to generate ib_cache events
- Force device unregister before queued work items run
- Trigger RDMA port query or cache update path that dereferences the stale net_device
- Observe KASAN-reported slab-use-after-free leading to crash or potential further corruption
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports mentioning dev_get_flags, rxe_query_port, or ib_cache_event_task; correlate with network device unregister messages and workqueue activity around the crash time.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in dev_get_flags
- rxe_query_port+0x12d/0x260
- ib_cache_event_task
- infiniband syz2: set down
- team0 (unregistering): Port device team_slave_0 removed
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing RDMA/rxe interfaces
- Monitor for device unregister events coinciding with infiniband workqueue activity
- Disable RXE if RDMA is not required until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/rxe: Remove the direct link to net_device The similar patch in siw is in the link: https://git.kernel.org/rdma/rdma/c/16b87037b48889 This problem also occurred in RXE.
