What it actually does

Crafted SQL statements trigger a crash or resource exhaustion inside the itc_set_param_row component, resulting in denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Database services become unavailable, interrupting dependent applications and requiring manual restart or failover.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with the ability to submit SQL statements sends specially crafted queries that reach itc_set_param_row and cause the process to terminate or hang.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a patched release of virtuoso-opensource once available; otherwise apply vendor-supplied mitigations or isolate the service behind strict query validation.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review release notes for the component fix, re-test the affected code path with previously crashing queries, and confirm the process no longer terminates under load.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain network or local access to a running Virtuoso instance
  2. Submit a crafted SQL statement targeting the vulnerable parameter handling path
  3. Trigger repeated requests to sustain the denial-of-service condition

How to detect it

Search database logs for repeated queries containing unusual parameter patterns that precede process restarts or error spikes; correlate with availability monitoring alerts.

What your security team should do

  • Monitor upstream repository for security updates and schedule prompt patching
  • Restrict direct SQL submission from untrusted sources until a fix is deployed
  • Implement query-length and complexity limits at the application or proxy layer

The record

An issue in the itc_set_param_row component of openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via crafted SQL statements.
