What it actually does
Race condition in Linux kernel leds class allowing concurrent device addition and attribute access to trigger NULL pointer dereference in brightness_show() and max_brightness_show() when led_cdev fields are unprotected by led_access mutex.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected kernel crashes or denial of service on systems handling dynamic LED devices such as game controllers, increasing downtime and operational risk especially on widely deployed Linux distributions.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker leverages timing window during HID device addition in one thread while another process reads LED brightness sysfs attribute, causing uninitialized or NULL led_cdev access as seen in dualshock4_led_get_brightness call paths; listed threat actors in Linux kernel campaigns could weaponize similar races for local privilege escalation or DoS.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to fixed versions: apache2 (Ubuntu:18.04:LTS) to 2.4.29-1ubuntu4.2 and apache2 (Ubuntu:14.04:LTS) to 2.4.7-1ubuntu4.15; apply kernel patches adding led_access mutex protection around brightness_show and max_brightness_show.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect kernel source for mutex_lock(&led_cdev->led_access) guards in brightness_show/max_brightness_show; verify no NULL dereference paths remain during device registration and attribute reads; test concurrent HID/LED addition and sysfs queries.
Typical attack path
- Schedule concurrent worker thread for uhid_device_add_worker and sysfs read via kernfs_fop_read_iter
- Trigger device_add and brightness_show without mutex held
- Dereference NULL pointer at led_cdev offset leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and ftrace for NULL pointer dereference during el0_svc or kernfs_seq_show with call traces containing dualshock4_led_get_brightness or brightness_show; review process activity around device_add and led_classdev_register_ext.
- dualshock4_led_get_brightness+0xc/0x74
- brightness_show+0x20/0x4c
- Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000060
- ESR = 0x0000000096000006
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel and package upgrades given publication date and ecosystem prevalence
- Monitor EPSS trend and threat actor activity around Linux kernel races
- Restrict untrusted HID device attachment until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: leds: class: Protect brightness_show() with led_cdev->led_access mutex There is NULL pointer issue observed if from Process A where hid device being added which results in adding a led_cdev addition and later a another call to access of led_cdev attribute from Process B can result in NULL pointer issue. Use mutex led_cdev->led_access to protect access to led->cdev and its attribute inside brightness_show() and max_brightness_show() and also update the comment for mutex that it should be used to protect the led class device fields.
