What it actually does
Use-after-free in btrfs_encoded_read_endio() during endio processing of encoded reads, triggered when pages allocated in btrfs_encoded_read_regular_fill_pages are freed before lock operations complete in the workqueue context.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using the btrfs filesystem face risk of kernel crashes, potential denial of service, or limited code execution when performing send operations or certain read workloads, with low but non-zero exploit likelihood.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers btrfs send or encoded read paths on a TCMU or similar device, causing the race between page freeing in send_extent_data and subsequent lock_release in the endio worker, leading to slab use-after-free.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit a40de0330af4fb7bc6b354250c24f294f8b826a0 or later stable releases that backport the fix for the btrfs use-after-free in encoded read endio handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; run btrfs-specific fstests including btrfs/284 on affected configurations; monitor for absence of KASAN reports in lock_release during endio work.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a btrfs filesystem
- Trigger btrfs_ioctl_send or equivalent send operation involving extent data
- Force encoded read path to allocate and free pages in btrfs_encoded_read_regular_fill_pages
- Race the endio workqueue execution to access freed memory in btrfs_encoded_read_endio
- Trigger KASAN-detected use-after-free during lock operations
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KASAN reports referencing btrfs_encoded_read_endio, lock_release, and slab-use-after-free in btrfs-endio workqueue contexts; correlate with btrfs send ioctl usage in audit logs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems using btrfs
- Restrict untrusted local access until patched
- Enable KASAN or similar debugging in test environments to validate
- Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any increase in exploit activity
